08Survival Lab is a fun pixelated game where dying doesn’t matter
Posted By: Admin on May 8, 2012 at 11:08 amFor each donut-like yellow thing you pick up, you gain a bit of experience. If you manage to collect several in a row without getting hit, this counts as a combo. You can see my mad combo skills in the screenshot, of course. Collecting combos is a good thing, because a ten-point combo gives you for more experience than just collecting ten dounts one by one (getting hit in-between).
Having experience is useful, because once you die, you get to a screen where you can upgrade your skills. You can learn to run faster, double-jump (and then double-jump higher), and duck. You can also gain more armour so that getting hit won’t kill you so quickly.
What makes this simple game so addictive is that when you die, your experience doesn’t reset. You just go back to the same level, or another level of your choosing, and keep accumulating more and more experience. Lots of fun, especially if you’re into the whole retro-gaming thing.

24Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features
Posted By: Admin on January 24, 2012 at 12:07 am Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it’s got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
- New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it’s easy to see where you are.
- Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
- User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
- Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps — like the ones pictured above — can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.
At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

18YBUY allows impulse tech buyers to wonder, ‘Why not?’
Posted By: Admin on January 18, 2012 at 4:05 amIt’s always helpful when tech start-ups scheme new ways for you to burn through that bank account. Like YBUY, the membership-only site that charges a monthly fee in exchange for trying out the latest and greatest in gadgetry, like an iPad 2 or Xbox 360, sans shipping fees. The fresh-out-of-beta portal offers approved users the ability to return or purchase the pre-selected goods after a 30 day trial period, with that recurring charge going towards the full retail price if you choose to opt-in. Its co-founders claim to curate the ever-changing roster of high-end kit, taking into account the best product reviews (ahem) and even featuring certified refurbs. So, what’s the catch? Well, there doesn’t really appear to be any. It’s simply up to you to curb that tech enthusiasm and keep your credit card balance resting peacefully at zero.

18Line Grapefruit is a tricky Flash “path” game
Posted By: Admin on January 18, 2012 at 1:05 amOkay, see that snaking line coming in from the right on the screenshot? That’s you. And see those large round circles? Those are supposedly grapefruits, only they won’t sit still – they keep moving up and down and cutting across your path. And if you touch one, you die!
That’s what you have to deal with in Line Grapefruit. But that’s not all – you’re also on a time limit. In fact, you have a very limited amount of time to make it through the “path” (for lack of a better word). You need to snake your way through the winding trail without touching anything. The good news is that a grapefruit only kills you if it touches the end of the line – once you’ve made it past the grapefruit, nothing happens if it crosses the path you’ve made.
This is not an easy game, but it’s quite unique – I can’t recall seeing another game quite like it.

17California demands manufacturers ditch inefficient vampire chargers
Posted By: Admin on January 17, 2012 at 6:07 pm
You’ve probably had it drilled into your head that your gadgets are doing terrible, terrible things to the environment — and not just ’cause they end up as toxic landfill in poorer countries. Many of your chargers and electronics continue to draw power even when they’re off or your device is disconnected. We’ve seen some ingenious solutions to the problem but, perhaps it would be best to avoid the issue all together. Starting next year California will require manufacturers to ship efficient chargers with their products, potentially saving $306 million in energy costs and cutting power usage by up to 13 percent in the state. The new rules are set to go into effect on February 1st, 2013, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the law faced some road blocks before then.
